04-12-2005 >> Work on the hood and trial fitted the engine

04-12-2005 - A view from inside on the gap at the end of the hood. This is how it looked off the car.

04-12-2005 - Welded the end of the gap between the hood and the fenders.

04-12-2005 - Same on the right side.

04-12-2005 - Trial fitted an engine, with the inter cooler in place. To give the inter cooler the air it deserves, metal around the front scope is removed. In black lines you see the edge of the front grill. When the grill is on the car, the gap and the inter cooler will be totally invisible. The inter cooler cannot be lowered because of the starter.

04-12-2005 - Et voila! An engine in the car!

04-12-2005 - The turbo exhaust manifold fits easily! More than enough room around it. Only problem is that you can hardly remove the manifold (with turbo and elbow attached) with the engine steady in place. A solution is to remove the engine steadies and tilt the engine a few degrees. There is at least 3cm room between the turbo and the bulkhead!

04-12-2005 - A view from the other side. Nice! :-)

04-12-2005 - Another view. Still enough room for a running engine. To make removal of the manifold easier, I plan to add a bit of room to the bottom-right of the manifold. I already made a small hole there, will fill it when the engine is out of the car.

04-12-2005 - There was a little problem with the elbow for the exhaust gasses leaving the turbo. It touched the sub-frame, just. To solve this, I removed about 8mm of metal from the flange on the elbow and bended the metal on the sub-frame a bit. You can see this in the middle of the photo.

04-12-2005 - A view from the top. I did a lot of measurements on our red Mini, but didn't think there would be this much room left between the turbo and the bulkhead (gap is hardly visible in the photo).

04-12-2005 - On the left, dressed in black, the new MP3 player for the garage. It's a Dell, 1 GHz, 512 MB RAM, running Fedora 4. Fast as a Mofo! :)
